Contribution to rural development

  Does the business contribute to a local population with additional skills and experience?
About 35 women from the surrounding villages are employed in the factory in various activities of production of banana products. They gained knowledge about various new uses of banana in form of different products. Similarly the smallest unit is capable of providing employment to 5-6 persons. This business has imparted new skill to the people involved. The business provided opportunity for education to entrepreneur (eg. SHAN). Ancient literature talks of medicinal/beneficial effects of banana flower. Process is labour intensive, hence scope for more jobs in each unit, work place healthy and non-hazardous.
 

 Strengths and weaknesses


  Does the business contribute to stable and positive local social relations? Does the business provide opportunities for establishing linkages outside the community?
Though the people involved directly and indirectly in the business belong to different socio-political groups and communities, as they work for a common cause it brought about a togetherness and bondage in their relationship. Better interaction at work place bridged the social divided based on community caste, creed, etc. Contributed to local development.
  Does the business contribute to the development of physical capital for production, for economic growth or for physical infrastructure at the local level?
As many units are located in villages, infrastructure like roads, transport, water services, electricity, telecom facilities improved in the area. It is providing physical capital for economic growth in future.
 
  Does the business contribute to an increase in income in local households?
The income of household of villages has improved. Almost all the women who are employed in these businesses were earlier jobless. Now all of them are earning a minimum of Rs.2000/- per month. The financial security has improved their lives and their accessibility to food and essential items of life. Though the people involved directly and indirectly in the business belong to different socio-political groups and communities, as they work for a common cause it brought about a togetherness and bondage in their relationship.
 
  Does the business adequately dispose of waste products? Does it use resources otherwise needed for marginal sectors? Is the business a good neighbor (smoke, smells noise)?
The financial security has improved their lives and their accessibility to food and essential items of life. This business does not produce any toxic waste nor does it compete with other natural resources.
